Excerpt from "Dale's Tales" for October 2020. (Dale Williams WA8EFK, ARRL Great Lakes Division Director)
OCTOBER is the month for the annual Simulated Emergency Test (SET).
Nationally it is held on the first weekend in October and this year KY
and OH will participate on Oct 3, while MI will hold their SET on Oct
10. So charge your batteries, gas up the generator, check out your jump
kit and get active with your local group. Most of our local Emergency
Coordinators (EC) have plans in place to test preparedness, nets,
deployment, traffic handling skills and problem solving. We all use
this event to see where our shortcomings may be and develop plans for
improvement. If you are not registered with your local Emergency
Coordinator, please do so and offer your assistance.
(ED – As of press time, no additional information available for West Michigan area SET participation)

OAK LEAF ENDURANCE RIDE 2020
Request for radio operators on October 10th from 8:00am until 2-4:00 to help out with an endurance horse race. It is called the Oak Leaf Endurance Ride 2020. This is not an official club event however the organizers would like some Amateur Radio Operators to work at some of the check points to help keep tabs on what is going on throughout the race. Also they would like a few to help escort horses across Allegan Dam to be sure that traffic does not cause a safety issue with the horses or riders. If you are only able to give an hour or two, that is fine. We will work with you. We will need at least 3 people with vehicles preferably at the Allegan Dam from 8am-2pm.
Here is the request from the event organizers.
The most important place is on both sides of the dam on Allegan Dam road roughly between 8:00 - 2pm?? If you have more people, other check points will be south of 128th on 41st, 120th & 51st, Ely Lake Campground and Pine Point-Allegan trailhead. Riders will ride from Silver Creek Park to the trailhead for a mandatory veterinary holds. Some riders will head back to SC, others will do a 20 mile loop to the west, back to trailhead for mandatory veterinary hold then head back to SC.
Anyone who is interested Please contact Phil Holscher W8PDH at 616-217-6427, or philholscher at gmail.com. Bring a friend to keep you company. Some may be asked to stay and help with communications into the evening.
